Homemade Laundry Detergent – Start Your Own High Profit Business

June 4, 2010 ·

Did you know that laundry detergents and other cleaning products are a major household and business expense?

And did you know that the industry is worth billions and increasing each year? The next time you visit your local supermarket, take a look at the many aisles offering products from laundry cleaners, floor cleaner, window cleaner and dozens more, as well as handwashes, hair and skin care products – the list is endless.

There are literally hundreds of other markets for these products, many largely untapped. Starting a business offering homemade laundry detergent has many markets – retailers love to stock one-of-a-kind homemade products.

Then there’s your friends and neighbors and businesses including laundries, hotels, accommodation facilities, etc. However, not all homemade laundry detergent recipes are of a professional grade.

Many common formulas use soap flakes and bi-carb soda are not very effective for cleaning clothes. A good homemade laundry detergent must be of the same calibre as those sold in the supermarket, if not better.

An effective detergent, suitable for retailing, needs to be able to achieve the following tasks:

1. Neutralize the acidity found in most types of dirt on clothing

2. Remove oils and grease, making them water dispersible.

3. Break down any carbon, dust and clay particles, making them super fine.

4. Keep the dirt in suspension so that the particles don’t redeposit themselves onto clothing during rinsing.

Most homemade laundry detergent recipes found on the world wide web can't achieve these functions. One such formula states you should end up with a bucket of “gelatinous slime”.

The calibre of this recipe is questionable and would not achieve the desired results but, more importantly, no retailer or consumer would purchase a product of this description. Even for home use, it doesn’t sound very appealing.

If you are considering a homemade laundry detergent business, you are certainly on the right track to achieve a successful venture.

Making your own homemade laundry detergent, cleaning products, toiletries and cosmetics doesn’t require a chemistry degree or an costly laboratory. It’s an extremely high profit industry with profits margins between 500 – 1000 %, very tiny competition and very low start-up cost.
